Creative Arts School: Delray Beach

History of the Creative Arts School

I stumbled upon the Creative Arts School (CAS) in downtown Delray Beach, Florida when I was wandering around Old School Square. An outdoor advertisement caught my attention regarding culinary classes and I thought to give them a try! Anything creative and sweet always peaks my interest and the fact that CAS is so easily accessible within Palm Beach County, is also very attractive!

In the Fall of 2024, after an extensive renovation, the Creative Arts School reopened and began offering a diverse range of classes and workshops in various artistic disciplines. CAS serves as a resource by offering a supportive environment where artists can hone their skills, share their work, and connect with like-minded individuals. Through classes, workshops, lectures, and collaborative projects, they provide opportunities for community, professional development and creative growth.

The Creative Art School (CAS) offers one-to-two-day workshops and 4-week classes in the following disciplines: Culinary, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Mixed Media, Textiles, Photography and Digital Media.

I knew that I had to take part on the Holiday Cookie Baking class because well, tis’ the season! Personally, I enjoy baking on a regular basis, so this was the most exciting for me. The class turned out to be very organized with all the ingredients being pre-measured and each attendee taking part in a recipe. Certain cookies were also pre-made and so we sliced those into cookie discs.

I also liked the fact that there were a number of recipes involved such as oatmeal cookies, gingerbread, chocolate chip, and sugar cookies! Now, I will be stuffing my face with all these amazing cookies till the end of the year!

In addition, I would delve into a Beginner Printmaking class. Gel plate printmaking specifically is a new art form that was popularized by Gelli Arts in 2011, which incorporates layering vibrant colors to experimenting with textures and patterns. There is an initial first layer of strictly paint that is rolled onto the gel plate to create the first layer, which might incorporate designs like color blocking.

In the second and third round of layering, stencils/cutouts are involved. In my experience, I also decided to spend extra time cutting out customized shapes to create a beach and outer space theme. Each time the stencils were placed down on the gel plate, rolled over with paint, and then the stencils were removed prior to placing the paper down again to create an additional layer. The paper gets peeled off after every layer and hence results in a multi-layered print.
