Dubai has been the both the hyped and most publicized city of the United Arab Emirates and Middle East alike. Home to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa and a vast array of shopping malls, Dubai draws in millions of tourists annually. Western traveller often view Dubai as a tourist-friendly option in the Middle East and hence don’t take into account the local culture prior to their visit. Although, there are many things to do in Dubai, there are also certain things you should not do in Dubai.

Unlike travelling to western destinations such as United States and Europe, tourists must have more of a heightened sense of awareness in the United Arab Emirates. The typical summer attire must take on a modest approach as well as various restrictions in the consumption and purchasing of alcohol, etc. Tourists that are not familiar with Middle Eastern culture must take into account the following rules of Dubai.

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking

Like most vacationers, having a cocktail or a glass of wine might be a norm. However, in Dubai, the consumption of alcohol is reserved for licensed venues such as hotels and restaurants. These venues will of course have a license to serve alcohol in the first place, so need to worry. On the other hand, purchasing and drinking alcohol (at home) is illegal without the possession of a liquor license. It is also smart to avoid public drunkenness and as we all should know, never drink and drive, especially not in Dubai. Also, wanted to add that there is a zero-tolerance drug policy, so leave your stash at home (ie. California). Smoking in public is also banned, but there are designated smoking areas throughout Dubai.

No PDA (Public Display of Affection)

A stark contrast to western culture, the UAE (amongst other eastern cultures) do not display (romantic) affection; not even if they’re couples. It seems heavily restricting not to kiss/hug your babe in public, but this is the norm in Dubai (UAE) and getting touchy feely could stir up trouble amongst the locals. Better to save that loving affection for behind closed doors where you won’t get spotted and possibly arrested for PDA.

Modest Dress Code

Although, bikinis for women and shirtless men are permitted at beaches and pools, that swimwear attire must remain at those specified locations. Meaning that wearing bikini tops or roaming about shirtless is not permitted in public. Don’t step off the beach and then into a restaurant or mall, thinking you’re in Hawaii…simply because you’re not. Therefore, conservative dress is an absolute must do in Dubai.

Avoid Checks (Cheques) for Payment

Most likely you won’t carry checks during your travels. In the rare case that you do, don’t do this in Dubai (UAE). If your check bounces you will be in big trouble and face, yes, criminal charges. Just don’t do it!

Do Not Photograph Local Residents (Emiratis)

To all my candid photographers that love capturing the locals, this is not the place to bombard people with your camera lens. Do not take photos of local residents unless you 100% have received permission to do so.

Ramadan Rules

When visiting during the month of Ramadan, it is imperative for tourists to be aware that Muslims will be fasting and heed to their practice. Not stating that you also are required to fast, but to be observant. Eating, drinking, smoking, loud disturbances, etc in public places during daylight hours are strictly prohibited. Not to say, that you have to starve till sunset, but don’t make a public display of it and keep your consumption within the restaurants that are open during those timeframes.
